4. What are hanging scrolls?

Hanging scroll is a traditional way of Chinese art presentation. It is an ancient art just like the Peking opera, Chinese calligraphy and paintings, Chinese art mounting has a long and glorious history. According to history records, Chinese art mounting has been around for more than 1,700 years.

On a hanging scroll, the painting or calligraphy is mounted between 2 pieces of fabric and/or paper, so that it can be hung for display or rolled for storage.

Our artworks are professionally mounted by hand at EDAS' workshop in Shanghai, using anti moth and mold materials. Following the traditional Chinese scroll mounting technique, the proportion of the piece of fabric/paper above the artwork to the piece of fabric/paper below the artwork is 3:2, i.e. the piece of fabric/paper on the top is longer than the bottom. The bottom piece of fabric/paper then wraps around a thick wooden dowel that acts as a weight when hanging.
